OSLO (Reuters) – A cold snap in Greenland in the 12th century may help explain why Viking settlers vanished from the island, scientists said on Monday.
The report, reconstructing temperatures by examining lake sediment cores in west Greenland dating back 5,600 years, also indicated that earlier, pre-historic settlers also had to contend with vicious swings in climate on icy Greenland.
"Climate played (a) big role in Vikings' disappearance from Greenland," Brown University in the United States said in a statement of a finding that average temperatures plunged 4 degrees Celsius (7F) in 80 years from about 1100.
Such a shift is roughly the equivalent of the current average temperatures in Edinburgh, Scotland, tumbling to match those in Reykjavik, Iceland. It would be a huge setback to crop and livestock production.
"There is a definite cooling trend in the region right before the Norse disappear," said William D'Andrea of Brown University, the lead author of the study in the U.S. journal Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences.
Researchers have scant written or archaeological records to figure out why Viking settlers abandoned colonies on the western side of the island in the mid-1300s and the eastern side in the early 1400s.
Conflicts with indigenous Inuit, a search for better hunting grounds, economic stresses and natural swings in climate, perhaps caused by shifts in the sun's output or volcanic eruptions, could all be factors.
LITTLE ICE AGE
Scientists have previously suspected that a cooling toward a "Little Ice Age" from the 1400s gradually shortened growing seasons and added to sea ice that hampered sailing links with Iceland or the Nordic nations.
The study, by scientists in the United States and Britain, added the previously unknown 12th century temperature plunge as a possible trigger for the colonies' demise. Vikings arrived in Greenland in the 980s, during a warm period like the present.
"You have an interval when the summers are long and balmy and you build up the size of your farm, and then suddenly year after year, you go into this cooling trend, and the summers are getting shorter and colder and you can't make as much hay," D'Andrea said.
The study also traced even earlier swings in the climate to the rise and fall of pre-historic peoples on Greenland starting with the Saqqaq culture, which thrived from about 4,500 years ago to 2,800 years ago.
Scientists fear that the 21st century warming is caused by climate change, stoked by a build-up of greenhouse gases from human activities. An acceleration of warming could cause a meltdown of the Greenland ice sheet, raising world sea levels.

By now, the self-centered if often generous nature of Sinatra is as well-known as his unequaled voice. What's fascinating about "Lady Blue Eyes" is how Barbara Sinatra turns to love, admiration and denial in explaining her place at Frank's side.
From her youth in the Midwest to her days as a model and showgirl, Barbara Blakeley longed for a well-heeled life of excitement. In her telling, it was Sinatra, then in his mid-50s, who initiated their affair. Soon, she was Frank's companion — marriage would be years away — and her husband at the time the second unfaithful spouse she had left for a more successful man.
Little love notes and rather large jewels were part of the good times with Sinatra. While she tends to excuse the darker moments in their three decades together, Barbara accepts that Frank's inner demons came with the glitter and glamour.
When Sinatra hurled a brass clock into a wall during a game of charades, she considered it part of his "dangerous" charm. He berated a female columnist who brought up their adultery — for good measure he stuffed two dollar bills in the woman's glass — but Barbara saw his actions as exciting, and a loving defense of her. Friends waited by the phone to see if and when he desired their company, a routine she seems to shrug off.
Her life revolved around his, and that was fine with her. At his behest she quit smoking — he thought it unfeminine — but he never gave up his unfiltered Camels. She quickly learned what those close to him already knew: When Frank was drunk, which was not infrequent, it was best to disappear.
Her version of events, such as why Sinatra kept performing far beyond his prime, at times clashes with those of others. "Frankophiles" will debate whether she was as selfless and dutiful as she appears in these pages.
One image is as chilling as it is sad: Sinatra, on the day he died, sitting in a wheelchair poolside at their Beverly Hills, Calif., home, suffering from heart and lung ailments and memory loss, a half-eaten grilled cheese sandwich on his plate.
Even Frank Sinatra's money, fame and power had their limits.

Le parc des Gargouilles, à cheval entre l'Essonne (91) et l'Eure-et-Loir (28), accueille désormais de nouvelles occupantes de grande taille. Les premières éoliennes franciliennes, au-delà de quelques éoliennes isolées et de basse altitude, fonctionneront dès cet été, trois sur les seize en cours de construction. Lundi 30 mai, une délégation du conseil régional avec son président, Jean-Paul Huchon (PS) viendra découvrir la première éolienne déjà en place et la seconde en chantier. Une victoire pour la région en retard sur cette énergie renouvelable… et qui peine à développer ces infrastructures.
Beaucoup de freins
«Le projet a été lancé en 2003, explique Georges Colboc, chef de projet chez Theolia qui gère la construction et l’exploitation. Les projets éoliens prennent du temps, en général autour de 5 ans et s’il y a des recours, entre 7 et 9 ans. Les habitants, que nous avons rencontrés et informés, n’ont pas déposé de recours. Et les préfectures d’Eure-et-Loir et d’Essonne ont été motrices. En revanche, ce qui rend difficile les projets éoliens, ce sont les réglementations qui évoluent en fonction des orientations locales. Et pour l’Essonne en particulier, l’armée s’est réservé depuis 2008 une zone d’entraînement et demande à ce qu’il n’y ait plus un seul projet d’éolienne sur cet espace. Notre projet a failli tomber à l’eau, mais nous avions obtenu le permis trois mois avant!»
S’il n’existe que peu de projets qui aboutissent, la région n’est pourtant pas totalement dépourvue d’atouts, notamment d’espaces agricoles et de vent. Trois grandes zones sont plus désignées pour recevoir les équipements : la Beauce en Essonne, le Gâtinais au sud de la Seine-et-Marne et la Brie dans l’est de la Seine-et-Marne. Et deux plus petits espaces sont aussi exploitables : l’ouest des Yvelines et le Vexin.
«Mais entre les interdictions pour cause de sites protégés comme le parc du Vexin, les réticences des élus et des populations dans le Gâtinais et dans la Brie, le contexte reste difficile pour les opérateurs de l’éolien qui évitent l’Ile-de-France», souligne Georges Colboc. «Je pense qu’il y a donc beaucoup de travail. Dans l’espace imparti, on pourrait construire entre 100 et 200 éoliennes qui alimenteraient 200.000 à 400.000 personnes en électricité. C’est faible au regard des 12 millions d’habitants… Mais aujourd’hui, l’Ile-de-France ne produit quasiment rien. D’autre part, la construction de parcs éoliens aux portes de la région a un aspect pédagogique et pourrait encourager d’autres chantiers.»

Infection bactérienne en Allemagne, inquiétudes en France
0 comments Posted by alex morgan at 3:12 AMLONDRES/PARIS (Reuters) - Les experts européens de la santé ont estimé samedi que l'épidémie d'infection à la bactérie E. coli en cours en Allemagne était grave et qu'elle menaçait d'autres pays.
Plus de 270 cas ont été recensés en Allemagne, dont au moins cinq mortels.
Jeudi, les autorités sanitaires allemandes ont indiqué qu'elles soupçonnaient des concombres importés d'Espagne d'être à l'origine de l'infection.
En France, les autorités enquêtent sur trois cas suspects. Il s'agit de personnes revenant d'Allemagne, a précisé le ministre du Travail et de la Santé, Xavier Bertrand, ajoutant par ailleurs qu'un lot de concombres d'origine espagnole avait été retiré du marché en Bretagne.
"Les trois personnes sont suivies de très près et le lot a été retiré de la consommation (...) Il ne faut pas qu'on passe de ce principe de précaution (et) de sécurité alimentaire à un système d'inquiétude", a souligné le ministre samedi soir sur France 5.
"On n'est pas dans une logique de contagion, ce n'est pas comme une grippe", a-t-il ajouté.
L'Institut national de veille sanitaire (InVS) recommande aux médecins hospitaliers ou libéraux ayant diagnostiqué une diarrhée sanglante ou un SHU survenus depuis le 20 avril chez des patients ayant séjourné en Allemagne dans les quinze jours précédents le début des symptômes de les signaler à l'Agence régionale de santé de leur région.
La bactérie incriminée est connue sous le type de bactérie à E. coli producteurs de shiga-toxines (STEC). Ces STEC peuvent entraîner des manifestations cliniques variées (diarrhée banale ou sanglante) pouvant évoluer vers une complication grave: le syndrome hémolytique et urémique (SHU).
Selon le Centre européen pour la prévention et le contrôle des maladies (CEPCM), basé en Suède, il s'agit de l'une des plus importantes épidémies de STEC/SHU jamais recensées à travers le monde et de la plus importante épidémie de ce type en Allemagne.
Au 25 avril, les autorités allemandes recensaient 276 cas de SHU. Des cas ont été rapportés en Suède, aux Pays-Bas, au Danemark, en Grande-Bretagne et en Autriche chez des personnes ayant voyagé en Allemagne.
Les experts du CEPCM soulignent aussi que cette épidémie est inhabituelle parce qu'elle touche principalement des adultes.
"Alors que les cas de SHU sont habituellement observés chez des enfants de moins de cinq ans, cette épidémie touche à 87% des adultes, principalement les femmes (67% des cas)", précise le CEPCM dans un communiqué.
Le syndrome hémolytique et urémique (SHU) affecte le sang, les reins et, dans certains cas graves, le système nerveux central. Il nécessite une hospitalisation.

Paget Brewster will continue on Criminal Minds next season, while new series regular Rachel Nichols has officially been let go.
Meanwhile, co-star Thomas Gibson still doesn’t have a deal for next season, with negotiations ongoing.
With Brewster and original cast member and fan favorite A.J. Cook returning to the CBS procedural alongside Kirsten Vangsness, there wasn’t much room left for Nichols, whose character Ashley Seaver was introduced last season in part to fill the void left by the departure of Cook’s JJ.
