Why do clowns wear red noses?

A clown’s red nose represents foolishness, drunkenness and emotional excess, and stems from the tradition of the ‘Auguste’ or ‘funny man’.Within the comedic tradition, the Auguste clown slowly took over from the ‘white face’ clown who was portrayed as a cocky and all-knowing ‘straight’ man. By contrast, red-nosed Auguste clowns were portrayed as foolish, unreliable individuals, lacking in self-control and hence becoming the butt of onstage jokes. Happy Red Nose Day!
