Cannes Film Festival

The Cannes Film Festival said today (Monday, apr 11) that legendary director Bernardo Bertolucci will receive an honorary Palme d’Or during its opening ceremony on May 11. Only twice before has such a tribute been paid to a director, the festival said, in 2002 to Woody Allen and in 2009 to Clint Eastwood. However, it said, beginning with the award to Bertolucci, the award will become an annual event at the opening ceremony. In a statement, President Gilles Jacob and Artistic Director Thierry Frémaux, said that the quality of Bertolucci’s unique work and the strength of his commitment to cinema make him the rightful recipient of its first annual honorary Palme d’Or.
